The presidents of El Salvador, Alfredo Cristiani, and Honduras, Rafael Leonardo Callejas, gave full support to President Serrano in recognition of Belize as an independent State and the intention of establishing diplomatic relations.

The support of Cristiani and Callejas presidents was expressed in a joint statement, signed by both leaders of those countries, the statement indicated that the firm will of President Serrano to negotiate directly with the State of Belize a solution to the territorial dispute, they reiterated the confident that with continued good faith and adherence to the principles of international law, negotiations between Guatemala and Belize conclurÃan with an agreement that would meet the legitimate aspirations of both peoples, its national interests and those of all the Central American community.

The dignitaries did see that the decision was based on the right to self-determination of peoples enshrined as a fundamental right in international human rights covenants.When asked by the press about the effects that such support would mean in Central American integration efforts, the Honduran president said that before making that determination the two leaders agreed on the need and right that had the Belizean people joining as a free nation to international context. They added that if the Guatemalan and Belizean authorities failed to solve the territorial dispute, the issue could be brought to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, end our days has not materialized as it is awaiting the referendum conducted on both peoples so that it can approve the intention to move to the International Court the dispute.

Deputy Eduardo Garcia Salas called the statement of the presidents Cristiani and Callejas as a result of interventionist expressions that recalled the old Central American dictatorships. "Rafael Callejas and Eduardo Alfredo Cristiani should abide by the vaunted respect for self-determination and hopefully everything is wrong," Parliamentary estimated.
